2002 Western Mass Championships at Smith

Despite the fact that several team members were sick, others were injured, and some just weren't feeling all that confident, the Lady Gaels put on a terrific display at last night's Western Mass Indoor Championships. Marissa Lapointe, Vickie Cavanaugh, and Jill Bigos started the night off on a great note, as each ran their best race of the season in the 2 mile. Marissa ran a strong race throughout (improving her personal best by over 10 seconds) to finish 4th overall (2nd in the team scoring. Right behind her were Vickie Cavanuagh, who took the pace out fast and held on for 5th (3rd in the team scoring). Jill Bigos finished right behind Vickie in 7th (4th in the team scoring). Both Vickie and Jill ran under 13:10, meaning that all three of the team's two-milers will be running next week in the Class D state meet. Considering that Marissa spent most of last indoor season on the sidelines with an injury, Vickie had never run the two mile prior to this season, and Jill had never run at all prior to this season (this was only her second two-mile race ever!) the fact that all three made the state meet is impressive, to say the least! In the hurdles, Jessica Tallman completed her first season as a sprinter by running a personal best of 11.2. Considering that Jessica had never run over a hurdle in her life prior to two months ago, she truly had a terrific season! Emily Coughlin ran 8.5 in the 55 meter dash, and then came back to run a spectacular lead leg in the 4x400 relay, staying with the leaders to run a :72, her best time ever in the 400. Emily will certainly be missed, as she moves on to join the tennis team for the spring season. Laura Jedrzejewski battled through an illness to finish a solid 5th in the most competitive race of the night, running the mile in a personal best of 5:52.5. Laura came back at the end of the night to run the 4x800 relay with Vickie, Jill, and Marissa, running a spectacular anchor leg of 2:41. In the final race of the night, Jessica Tallman, Katie Parsons, and Laura MacDonald joined Emily in the 4x400. Katie ran a personal best of :89 in the 400, and Laura M. returned to the track after a long layoff due to injury to run a personal best of :78. Great job ladies! Thanks again to Peter Cassebeer for the pictures!
